Jobless Claims Increase
WASHINGTON, D.C. - December 6, 2002
- The number of unemployed workers rose to 8.5 million in
November and the unemployment rate increased to 6%. This
is the highest rate since April. From May through October,
the jobless rate remained within a range of 5.6 to 5.9 percent.
Retail employment dropped in November due a reduction in
seasonal hiring, while employment in manufacturing, communications,
gas, electric and sanitary services also dropped.

is still not much good employment news to report. United
Airlines is reportedly considering bankruptcy. AOL, in the
wake of a negative earnings report due to a drop in advertising
revenue, plans to eliminate hundreds of jobs. Textron's
Cessna Aircraft Company is expected to lay-off 1,500 workers,
while GM Locomotive is cutting 900 jobs.
